Miss Paula Callahan
(Comp Tap; Recreational 2- to 9-year-olds, 7/8 Tap, 7-10/11+
Theatre, 9/10 Tap, Teen Tap, Adult Tap, Adult Jazz, Adult Ballet,
Stretch/Jazz)
Miss Paula has danced since she was 3 years old, but realized early on that she would rather share that love of dance through teaching than anything else. After 38 years of teaching dance, she continues to get great enjoyment out of watching students develop through their love of dance. She began her training as a child at Mary Jane's School of Dance in Methuen, MA, and has attended classes and workshops in many cities across the country including Boston, New York, Buffalo, and Chicago. She is a graduate of the Dance Teachers’ Club of Boston's teacher training school and a member of their organization. As a young dancer and baton twirler she received numerous awards in regional competitions. As a teacher, her students have received many gold and silver awards as well as special judges’ awards.
One of the most important things she has done as a dance teacher is to start the Special Education program at The Dance Works. For more than 23 years she and The Dance Works have taught special needs students how to express themselves through dance. A highlight each year is the studio’s "Special Evening of Dance" which showcases these very special people.
Another of her most rewarding professional accomplishments is the building of the adult program at The Dance Works. Starting with a class of 6 adult tap students, the program has grown to incorporate more than 70 adults studying not only tap, but also ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyric, and Irish. To see the love of dance she has instilled through these mature ladies and gentlemen gives her great joy.
In addition to teaching at The Dance Works, MIss Paula co-advises (with her daughter, Miss Julie) the Timberlane High School Dance Team and co-choreographs (again with Miss Julie) the high school and middle school musicals. She has choreographed over 20 shows including Crazy for You, Beauty and the Beast, and West Side Story.
She is a proud founder of C4 Productions, which consists of herself, her son Michael (who arranges and plays all the music), her daughter Miss Julie (who choreographs the dances), and a very good friend who directs the shows. C4 Productions creates and produces original holiday musicals that are performed each holiday season by high school students and presented to the public free of charge. It is another way to share her love of dance and musical theatre with the performers, the audience, and most importantly, her own 2 children.
